Groundbreaking Aqueous Lithium Battery Research from Fudan University (2013)

Back on March 13, 2013, Scientific Reports (a journal under Nature Portfolio) published a landmark battery research paper led by Professor Wu Yuping from Fudan University. The new aqueous lithium battery system lifts overall battery performance by 80%, enabling EVs to drive 400 km after only 10 seconds of ultra-fast charging. This innovative battery also stands out with low production cost, excellent thermal stability and far lower explosion risks compared with traditional lithium cells.

Core Structure & Technical Breakthrough

Professor Wu's team showcased the prototype system: thin lithium metal foil wrapped in customized polymer-inorganic composite film, paired with spinel lithium manganese oxide cathode inside neutral water-based electrolyte. The finished cell reaches a charging voltage of 4.2V and discharge voltage of 4.0V, smashing the theoretical water decomposition voltage limit of 1.23V for aqueous solutions.

The composite isolating film cuts internal energy loss below 5%, while the water electrolyte brings strong flame retardancy and avoids severe overheating during operation. The whole system supports mass manufacturing with low raw material costs and zero heavy metal pollution.

Practical Application Advantages

1.Consumer electronics: Same-size cell doubles mobile phone standby time, with manufacturing cost less than half of conventional lithium batteries.

2.Electric vehicles: Longer driving range and much milder environmental pollution during production & recycling.

Industry Cooperation Outlook

U.S. energy research institutions reached out for technical cooperation after the paper release. Nevertheless, Professor Wu prioritized partnerships with forward-thinking domestic battery manufacturers. The team believes aqueous lithium batteries can be widely applied across daily consumer devices and new energy vehicles, solving two major bottlenecks of the global EV industry: safety risks and high procurement costs.
